The Heart & Stroke Foundation is preparing for theirannual ‘Door to Door’ campaign next February. They have created specific routesexclusive to Midland Park in recognition of the MPCA activities.

Thereare 32 routes in total, each route requiring only 20 –30 visits. We have 5volunteers now but need an additional 25 to cover our community.

Ifyou can spare an hour or two in February to canvass for this worthy cause,please contact Bill Leigh, our local H & S Captain at (416) 755-7549 andhe’ll be pleased to give you more details and allow you to choose your route(on a first come first served basis). We are trying to have volunteersidentified by the end of November.

I understand that a walking group from the Midland Park Community meets regularly to hike the Highland Creek ravine in the area and I wish to let you know of an upcoming community planting event that may be of interest to your members and neighbours.
The event will take place in Cedarbrook Park, just a bit downstream from your area, and details are pasted below. Additional events and other information on our environmental projects happening in the area can be found on our website: www.trca.on.ca/highland. These projects are in partnership with the City of Toronto, as well as community partners.

We would be thrilled if any of the Midland Park Community residents would like to join in the event...perhaps at the end of a stroll through the West Highland Creek ravine!

Now that summer is unofficially over, the days are getting shorter, and weekends are not as busy as they were, please join The Midland Park Community Association walking / hiking group at its new day and time every Sunday from 2:00 - 3:00 pm. The summer walks were great, with new friends made while exploring not only the charming streets and walking trails of Midland Park (see the map above for an example of one of our routes), but other beautiful areas of Scarborough such as the Bluffs and Highland Creek. So, please join us as we get set to enjoy Fall and make even more friends.

We still meet at the "heart start" sign where Birkdale Ravine begins off Ellesmere Road (beside the entrance to the Birkdale Community Centre) for a quick stretch before the walk, and then off we go! If you have any questions at all, please email Carol Baker at mpca.walkingandhikinggroup@gmail.com

Art in the Park is an annual one-day outdoor community arts festival that is held in the Birkdale Ravine surrounding the Birkdale Community Center.

Artists will have the opportunity to connect with the community, display their work and discuss ideas and practices.

Art in the Park is open to all artists working in fine art* and crafts*: entries will be chosen by a selection committee. Decisions of the committee are final.

First Annual Midland Park Jane's Walk a Success

The First Annual Midland Park "Jane’s Walk" was a success with over 20 folks joining in the walk through our very own neighbourhood gem, Birkdale Ravine, with numerous stops along the way where we took time to fully appreciate the natural beauty and serenity of our hidden treasure, and share our personal stories of life in Midland Park.

Jane’s Walks were started to honour the idea and legacy of Jane Jacobs, an urban activist and writer who moved to Toronto in the 1970’s and championed the interests of local residents and pedestrians. The simple and adaptable concept of free neighbourhood walking tours led by local volunteers proved to be internationally successful (Jane’s Walks are now held throughout the world in places like Berlin, Madrid, La Paloma Uruguay, Lusaka Zambia, Goa, Mumbai India, and Dublin Ireland). The stage is set for the Midland Park Jane's Walk to take place every year on the first weekend of May, and it is never to early to start collecting our stories and photos for the next walk. A signature moment in our May 2011 walk was our stop along the ravine in honour of Lori Walker, a long time resident in the Birkdale Community who spent many hours volunteering with various community organizations, and who enjoyed taking her faithful companion Nash for daily walks through the Birkdale Ravine. We'd like to continue the tradition of honouring the legacies of our residents, many of whom have plaques displayed at Birkdale Ravine in their memory. So, please share those special stories with us. Please come out and join us for an hour or two as we better our community by picking up the litter from our streets, boulevards, parks, and schoolyards.

Safe Streets - We have them, let`s keep them!

Midland Park rates among the best neighbourhoods in the GTA when it comes to low crime. This unfortunately does not mean no crime, and though our streets are safe, clean and quiet we need to be aware of the crime that takes place near our borders.

At Brimley and 401 the Mirror has reported recent people crime and at Brimley & Ellesmere there was an attempted break and enter. In front of Churchill Collegiate there was an incident of gunfire recently as well.

Know that I do not mention this to scare anyone, but to encourage everyone to be diligent. As Staff Sergeant Wade Alphonso told a Midland Park Community meeting "if something doesn't look or feel right, report it". Use the non-emergency number for anything that concerns you (416-808-2222.)

I have been told often neighbours see people sitting in cars throughout the neighbourhood that look like they don't belong. Note the license plate and report the vehicle, you do not need to get involved and if they are doing nothing wrong they have nothing to worry about.

If you saw something you didn't report and it later turned out to be a crime in progress you wouldn't be able to forgive yourself so don't hesitate to make a call when you feel it is necessary.

I love this neighbourhood and have enjoyed this Midland Park Lifestyle since I was 18 months old. Though much of this world has changed, our slice of heaven remains the same because of conscientious neighbours like you and I. Let's work to keep this lifestyle for our children and grandchildren,..... Midland Park forever! :-)

The Walk about will be conducted by Kristen O'Reilly from the Crime Prevention Association of Toronto. Our intensions is to look for opportunities for improvement and best practices that will make our great neighbourhood safer. What's That Smell? Atlantic Packaging Update

Updates on Atlantic Packaging's ongoing work to address odour and noise issues from its Progress Avenue facilities are available here:

At the request of the local community, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment completed air quality testing in November. The key finding was that there was no potential for health impacts from plant emissions.

However, the report states that: "A portion of samples collected fell above the minimum odour threshold (The lowest concentration of a certain odour compound that is perceivable by the human sense of smell)."

Community Shared Agriculture Food box from Wicklow Way Farm

Hello Neighbours,

I live in Midland Park on Stephenfrank Road and last year I participated in a Community Shared Agriculture Food box from Wicklow Way Farm. Every Thursday I would pick up my food box from the Guildwood Farmer's Market filled with fresh, heirloom, organic vegetables and fruit.

It was the most amazing experience and I am dying to participate in their food share program again. At the beginning of the summer you buy a share in their farm for $550 and you will not be disappointed with the delicious food that you receive. Everything from sweet yellow tomatoes, watermelon, kale, beets and winter squash! Unfortunately the Guildwood farmers markets only had 5 foodshare participants last year and they need at least 20 to have the program at that location again. So PLEASE sign up sot aht we can get this amazing local service again. You will never have to go to the grocery store all summer! This box feeds a family of four for sure and the taste is beyond your expectation.

Heart Month Canvasser’s needed for February!

Our Heart Month Person to Person campaign is when thousands of volunteers across Ontario go door-to-door in their neighbourhood to raise funds and awareness towards beating heart disease and stroke. Last year, our Heart Month campaign raised over $5.4 million! Our goal this year in the GTA is to raise over $354,000.00, and to do this, we are in need of Heart month canvassers.

As a canvasser, volunteering just 3 hours of your time to open doors in your neighbourhood of Midland Park this February will have a huge impact on thousands of Canadians. As an Ambassador for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, you will go door-to-door to visit 20-25 on a route in your area to:
• Ask for funds to support life-saving Heart and Stroke Foundation research
• Raise awareness by handing out Heart Month brochures
• Thank neighbours for supporting the Heart and Stroke Foundation

1. Best practices: Good news! Atlantic Packaging is hoping to learn from a paper mill in South Carolina that managed to fix a similar odour problem. Some of these U.S consultants actually visited Atlantic's facility at 333 Progress Ave. to provide their recommendations.

2. Odour update: At Atlantic Packaging's Community Consulting Group meeting on September 23rd, they shared some of the results from the consultant's odour report. The presentation included information on the likely cause of the odour (acids released by bacteria) and the proposed time frame for when the odour issues will be resolved (next spring or summer). 3. What are these acids? The acids emitted by the bacteria (according to Atlantic's presentation) seem to match the odour descriptions from residents such as 'acrid', 'burning', and 'vomit'. Apparently acetic, propanoic, and butyric acids "create odors that smell like vinegar, Swiss cheese, and rancid butter, respectively." Ref

Some residents have voiced health concerns at our meetings so TEA did some quick research on these acids. New Jersey's Right to Know Hazardous Substance Fact Sheets for Acetic Acid, Butyric Acid, and Propanoic Acid claim that these acids, when inhaled, can "irritate the nose, throat and lungs causing coughing, wheezing and/or shortness of breath." It is not yet known if the amount of acids being released by the bacteria could result in these effects, which is why we need to see a detailed odour report from the consultant.

4. Public accountability: According to residents who attended the meeting, the consultant's complete odour report will not be made public. This report has proprietary information on their facility's processes that they do not want to disclose. Instead, the consultant (Conestoga-Rovers and Associates) has committed to developing a report for the public by the end of October. It is important for the community to see detailed information in this report such as the air quality tests, the odour audit results, the odour control technology options and much more.

Atlantic is planning an 'Open House' at their 333 Progress Ave. facility the week following Thanksgiving (week of October 11th). The details have not yet been confirmed but we will keep you updated! Please plan to attend this meeting to ask important questions and see the facility first hand.

What you can do
Noise testing: If you notice loud industrial noises, please email Atlantic Packaging and encourage them to do noise testing on your property. Atlantic's noise update suggests that the TORBED incinerator is not a likely cause of the loud noise levels. This is a good opportunity to encourage testing at their facility at 350 Midwest Rd. Call in odour complaints: Continue to report your odour complaints to Atlantic Packaging (env@atlantic.ca) and the Ministry of Environment (416-326-6700). The company is relying on our reports to determine whether or not their efforts to control the odours are working.

A Good Neighbour

Subject: a Good Neighbour

On Wednesday Sept. 9, a boulevard tree was felled by a gust of wind, completely covering the roadway of Lesterwood in Midland Park. Fortunately, no one was injured and there was no property damage. However, residents of Lesterwood and Arlene Cres. were prevented from getting home by their usual route.

About thirty minutes after the tree fell, a young neighbour, a Midland Park resident but living a long block from the incident and not at all affected by the road closure, arrived on the scene with a crosscut hand saw and began cutting the top branches to ultimately clear a path for the vehicles. He worked for about an hour.

I've attached pictures of this youth which indicate the volume of branches he cut and moved. By the way, after these pictures were taken, he went home and then returned with a broom to sweep the roadway.

I would nominate this young man for Neighbour of the Year and believe all neighbours living on Lesterwood and Arlene would concur.

His name is Corey Barnes and he lives at No. 12 Rosswood Crescent.

This post was temporary removed due to a request from a resident who thought it may have a negative effect on selling their house, I have received a great demand to repost it. This is intended to inform residents of what is going on. What are we going to do about it will come soon.

Although we live in a safe and vibrant neighbourhood, crime does happen. Listed below are some emails we have received recently from residents. We need to keep our eye's open for our neighbourhood and make it uninviting for those that have ill intentions.

"There have been a number of break ins in the past 2 days in our community. I know of one on Aspendale and I believe 1 on Durrington and one on Manorwood. Apparently the culprits throw a bottle or something like that through the window and wait to see if anyone responds to it. A dog barking, an alarm or the home owner turning on some lights in the house to investigate the noise. If no one responds they then enter by forcing the door open. Most of these houses T.V.'s and computers seem to be the target One man on Manorwood was sitting in his basement watching T.V. when he heard a loud crash. He went to investigate and saw some people running away.

Have you heard of any of these break and enters? Perhaps an email and a newsletter should be sent out to the community."

There is something extremely important that I would like to share with you. Around 3 or 4 weeks ago, while my little brother was helping in the front yard, a young man looking in his 17 showed up and he was selling a variety of electronic stuffs. For ex, he was forcing my brother to buy an " Apple Mac " for only $ 40!!! He also pretended that he is married, he has a baby to feed and that his wife was taking drugs...After some days, while my husband was busy working with some machines in the garage, he approached him and told him the whole exact story again. Of course, my husband was totally astonished since the machines were making such a great noise. He is white with short hair, not too tall and very thin. I believe we should not ignore little details like so. So, let's work together hand in hand for a better neighbourhood. I would be more than happy if we could realise that."

There have been some strange people wandering the neighbourhood!

Four weeks ago some random guy came up from the ravine and scared the daylights out of me while I was cleaning the pool. He was lost he said. The guy took off between the houses and the next day my neighbour xxx Birkdale had a bike stolen. They did file a police report. First time in 18 years that someone has come up the ravine especially to my place as I am so far away from the bike trail. Since then there have been alot of people wandering down behind my home in the ravine.

Three weeks ago I was approached from behind while mowing the lawn. Some young dark guy wanted to mow the lawn for me for of course cash.

The reason I am mentioning this was that I had never seen this guy before and they were not too impressed I watched them until they had completely left the neighbourhood.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the meeting tonight. Could you please keep me posted.

For what it's worth, my car was broken into last year (xx Brookridge Dr.) and change and CD's were stolen. I didn't report it, but assumed that it was teenagers as a wad of gum had been left in my car. I imagined them going off to that second hand CD store at Kennedy Common to exchange the CD's for cash.....

We live in a very safe an quiet community and we can keep it that way with vigilance and a strong neighbourhood watch program.

At xx Lesterwood, my cars were robbed 2 Saturday nights ago and I did file a police report.

I noticed 2 different types of cigarette butts and an empty pack at my blvd the next morning (DKs and Belmonts) and assumed it was two youths stealing change to get smokes.

BTW - My parents and another neighbour also mentioned their cars had been robbed from but neither filed reports. This is a MUST if we want to get help from the police and stem future crime.

Thank you for turning out to celebrate the grand opening of the off-leash area.. it was a great success and the dogs seemed to be really enjoying themselves! If anyone has photo's of the event please let me have them to post on the website.

In case you couldn't attend the City hope to have the area completed within a week to ten days, it will have waste bins at the entrances and a community notice board. They will also be providing some benches within the area but I'm not sure when this will be.

Future...
In the next few weeks I will call a meeting to formalize the structure of the dog owners association. So far we have run it very loosely but now we need a structure to ensure we run it for the benefit of all members.
We will need volunteers to take on roles such as fund raising, treasurer, publicity and volunteer coordination plus others I haven't even thought of! If you have an interest in any of these roles please let me know so I can prepare for the meeting.

In the meantime please let me have your ideas for future development of the site... on the list already are poop bag dispenser and water fountain.

Last week Pradheepa Simonpillai and some neighbours started a clean up of the Edgewood park, many bags of garbage

were collected leaving the park cleaner and safer for the little ones that play there.

This Thursdays at 11:30 am Pradheepa and friends will finish picking up at the park and then continue with the

Birkdale ravine at the Edgewood entrance.

This natural gas lamp on Munson Cres. appears to be the last working gas lamp. Sold to new home buyers as an option, the subtle light provide an elegant atmosphere to the neighborhood.

When all the lights went out during the blackout, this sentinel of light stayed on to remind us that if we cherish some of our history, we won't get left in the dark.

SOMETHING DOES NOT SMELL RIGHT, RESIDENTS SAY

In the last couple of months residents have called us with concerns about odours from the Atlantic Packaging plant on Progress Ave. We responded by notifying the company about these concerns and worked with Atlantic Packaging to develop a solution.

Residents who had concerns and contacted our office were invited to attend a meeting at the Atlantic Packaging facility with company management and my office. Residents asked questions about processes used in the plant. Atlantic Packaging staff answered these questions and agreed to set up a process that makes it easy for residents to make their complaints heard and to get quick action. Residents who attended the meeting were invited to tour the plant. Following the meeting, Atlantic Packaging emailed each resident updates about the steps being taken to "clear the air."

The company has advised me that they are taking the odour issue seriously and they will do everything possible to locate the problem and correct it. Atlantic Packaging has appointed their Environmental Systems Manager, Fatima Correia to be the company contact for resident complaints on this issue. 40 years ago my parents bought in Midland park on Cartier, a year later when they adopted my sister we moved around the corner to a 4 bedroom on Brookridge. They are still there as are many of our original neighbours.

Some 30 years later my wife and I bought on Roseglor and 4 years ago moved to Lesterwood. We live in the same style house I grew up in and the neighbourhood still feels like home. There are many many children who grew up in Midland Park that have moved back in as adults.

Why are you here? How many years have you been here? Tell me why you love Midland Park,... for me it is because as the world around us changes all the good things here seem to stay the same.
